There were 30,951 institutions (including private schools) in NWFP, 7,577 of which were in the province’s five most affected districts. The institutions in these five districts were 24% of the total institutions in the province and enrolled 0.7 million students. The earthquake has caused extensive destruction to physical infrastructure. Most educational institutions’ buildings have either been destroyed or rendered dangerous to use. In addition to damage to educational institutions and offices, the education sector has lost people. A six months Education Reviving Project has been signed by the SRSP with USAID with twofold objectives of installation of tents to functionalize the schools and the cash for work program to benefit the local communities at Abbottabad, Mansehra and Battagram.
The timely provision offurniture plays a very important role in the increase of enrollment and its delay encourages drop out. The furniture in bulk was received and was store in warehouse and transported it into desired school on priority bases. The furniture was handed over to the responsible authorities.
The provision of shelters has given a new orientation to this project in terms of quality because the tents we install in the beginning due to low quality were not much appreciated by the community and teachers. Six shelters are to be installing at each primary school but the number varies from school to school due space limitation and enrollment problems. These shelters have motivated the community to send their children and also attracted the students to come to their school.
To raise the standard of education in Government school, in Oct 1999 the Government of Pakistan formed a committee named as PTA (Parents Teachers Association) .
Now these committees are working in different Govt schools for the timely completion of developmental project and social action program of schools. After the disaster the PTAs had be come inactive although most of them were registered but were not functional because many PTAs members died in the disaster. The survivals have migrated to the safe area.
The USAID project also focuses on the reformation / reconstitution of PTAs. The social immobilizers are reconstituting the PTAs in the targeted schools.
