Earthquake in Pakistan

An earthquake of intensity 7.6 on the Richter scale hit Pakistan at 0850 on 8th October 2005; the epicentre of the quake was 95 km north-east of Islamabad, the capital city. Approximately 3.3 million people have been affected. Major areas affected are in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). SRSP has worked with 38% of these affected households in Abbottabad, Mansehra and Battagram.

SRSP presence over a period of more than ten years and deep-rooted connections with the people of the area compelled it to rise to the occasion. SRSP mobilized its resources (logistics, financial & human resources etc.) and initiated large-scale relief operation in three affected districts Mansehra, Abbottabad and Battagram of NWFP.

Organizational structure was restructured and a full-fledged Relief Cell was established in Mansehra supported by Relief, Rehabilitation & Development Section at Head Office. The Regional Relief Cell was provided with support in monitoring and evaluation, audit and warehouse facilities to ensure that the relief operation was smooth, well documented and organised. A gender monitoring cell was also established at the Regional Office, which was made mobile and would visit different parts of the districts to ensure that gender needs were adequately addressed. Field camps were established at Balakot, Batal, Andrasi, Mansehra, Battagram and Alai where staff were based permanently on a 24 hours duty.
