In 2007 the FATA Civil Secretariat Developed the FATA Sustainable Development Plan in which the SRSP was envisaged as an important implementing partner of the strategy for the involvement of civil society in the development process in FATA. Two briefings were organized for the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2007 in which the Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Additional Secretary FATA and Mr Shoaib Sultan Khan participated to discuss the extension of the Rural Support Programmes to FATA.  A unit was  established within SRSP to accomplish this.

In 2007 the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa approved a grant of Rs 200 million for extension of Rural Support Programmes to FATA. The Board of Directors of SRSP is the trustee of this endowment and was extended to give representation to FATA. The objective of the endowment was to provide the institutional stability and capacity for the Rural Support Programmes to deliver programmes on a long term basis in the area and have the capacity to address the chaotic and uncertain  environment where information is lacking. The endowment has enabled SRSP to begin programmes in Kurrum, FR Peshawar and in South Waziristan.

As part of the process, SRSP was to leverage additional resources for strengthening the development programme in the area. Therefore, In October 2009 an agreement was signed between CIDA and SRSP to initiate a programme in Kurrum and FR Peshawar.It’s a multi-sector development programme focused on improved and sustainable livelihoods of the poor and marginalized communities of the federally administrated tribal areas.  Project goal to alleviate poverty in select communities through improved livelihoods, basic development services, income-generating opportunities and improved local governance. The main components of this programme are:

1. Community Institutions and Networking
2. Improving & Strengthening Livelihoods
3. Policy Advocacy for pro-poor development
4. Community Physical Infrastructure
5. Improving Access to Social Sector Services

SRSP’s Humanitarian Programme in FATA

SRSP with the collaboration of UNHCR has initiated humanitarian projects in FATA in Orakzai, Momand and South Waziristan Agencies. This is an on-going programme which supports the supply of non food items of IDPs and the building of shelters.
